      Ecuador also includes the Galápagos Islands in the Pacific, about 1,000 kilometers (621 mi) west of the mainland. The country's capital is Quito, but its largest city is Guayaquil . The oldest of all South American capitals, Quito is notable for its well-preserved old town, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1978.
      The avifauna of Ecuador has 1663 confirmed species, of which eight are endemic to the mainland and 31 are endemic to the Galápagos. Four have been introduced by humans, 78 are rare or vagrants, and one has been extirpated. An additional 41 species are hypothetical (see below).
