On the eastern side of the Atlantic, a closely related sub-species, Eucidaris tribuloides var. africana, has been reported at Cape Verde Islands, in the Gulf of Guinea, and at the Azores and Ascension Islands. E. tribuloides has become an invasive species in some parts of the world including Maltese waters where it has been since 1998.
The larval nervous system of Eucidaris tribuloides lacks features of other echinoids. Embryos are without an animal plate and a larvae do not have a discrete apical organ. Neural markers indicate that animal pole domain includes a broad region of apical ectoderm. Derived features of euechinoid nervous system arose after divergence, 265 MYA.
    E. tribuloides has become an invasive species in some parts of the world including Maltese waters where it has been since 1998. This was the first record in the Mediterranean and is thought to have been brought there in ballast water. McPherson described E. tribuloides as a "sluggish echinoid" that leads a nocturnal, benthic existence.
Adult E. tribuloides were collected by snorkeling on reefs flats on the island of Bocas del Toro, Panama, or were purchased from Gulf Specimens Marine Lab and held at room temperature in natural seawater. Gametes were obtained by intracoelomic injection of 0.5 M KCl and embryos were raised in 0.2 μm filtered seawater (FSW) at 25 °C.
