When did FishBase start?
Pauly recruited Rainer Froese, and the beginnings of a software database along these lines was encoded in 1988. This database, initially confined to tropical fish, became the prototype for FishBase. FishBase was subsequently extended to cover all finfish, and was launched on the Web in August 1996.

Click the Species button in the FishBase Main Menu. You can then search for a species by scientific name, common name, family, country, quick identification, or topic. A list is generated according to the search and by double-clicking on a scientific name, you enter the SPECIES window of that particular species.

FishBase is currently hosted by the Quantitative Aquatics, Incorporated (Q-quatics), a non-stock, non-profit, non-governmental organization engaged in the development and management of global databases on aquatic organisms, including their distribution and ecology. It is scientifically guided by a Consortium of 12 international members (see below).
