The history of Kosovo dates back to pre-historic times when the Starčevo culture, Vinča culture, Bubanj-Hum culture, and Baden culture were active in the region. Since then, many archaeological sites have been discovered due to the abundance of natural resources which gave way to the development of life.
The land area of the country is 10,910 square kilometres (4,210 sq mi), being the 161st largest country in the world. The border between Kosovo and Albania stretches for a total of 113.551 km (70.557 mi) and is situated along the southwestern edge of the country.
This was when Kosovo was used as the name of the entire territory for the first time, a derivation from the Serbian word "Kos" (which means black bird). It is shortened from Kosovo Polje meaning "Field of the Blackbirds", where the Battle of Kosovo of 1389 was fought.
