A new species and genus of stem-group ‘soft corals’ (Anthozoa: Octocorallia: Alcyonacea) is described and illustrated in detail, as well as compared to other species of the sparse octocorallian fossil record. Sueciatractos leipnitzae gen. et sp. nov. has been collected from the Upper Silurian Hemse beds of the Isle of Gotland, Sweden.
Although Octocorallia were found in all areas of the study site, among the most common taxa, the species Paramuricea sp. 1, Narella sp. 1, Pseudoanthomastus sp. 1, Trachythela rudis sp. 1, and Keratoisididae sp. 3 were more frequent in areas C, D, and E, and absent in A (Supplementary Data 1 ).
Our study provides evidence for a single origin of bioluminescence in Octocorallia and infers the age of the phenomenon across these ancient animals, setting a new record for the earliest timing of the emergence of bioluminescence in the marine environment. 2. Methods
In terms of distribution range, the majority of DSC (60%) were limited to the middle slope (785–963 m depth), whereas only 7.3% of the species occurred exclusively on the upper slope (241–502 m depth) (Supplementary Data 1 ). Among the groups, most Octocorallian species were exclusively found on the mid-slope (30 species or 71%).
