  1. protogyny bisexuality, in biology, the condition of an organism capable of producing both male and female gametes (sex cells). In plants and microorganisms, this is often referred to as monoecism. In multicellular animals, bisexuality is usually called hermaphroditism (q.v.).

Protogyny is a more common form of sequential hermaphroditism in fish, especially when compared to protandry. As the animal ages, it shifts sex to become a male animal due to internal or external triggers, undergoing phyiological and behavioral changes.
Protogynous hermaphrodites can display either monandry or diandry. Monandric species are those in which all males in the population are derived secondarily from functional females, termed secondary males. Diandric species have two pathways of male development and, thus, two types of males.
In general, protandrous hermaphrodites are animals that develop as males, but can later reproduce as females. However, protandry features a spectrum of different forms, which are characterized by the overlap between male and female reproductive function throughout an organism's lifetime:
Of the approximately 480 hermaphroditic fish species, at least 314 species from 20 families of teleost orders have been confirmed to undergo protogynous sex changes (Table 4.1 ). This is the highest among the four types of hermaphroditism (i.e., simultaneous, protandry, protogyny, and bidirectional; Kuwamura et al. 2020 ).
