    Thalassina is the only genus in the family Thalassinidae (=Scorpionoidae Haworth, 1825 ). For many years, only a single species, Thalassina anomala, was recognised, but a 2009 revision by Nguyen Ngoc-Ho and Michèle de Saint Laurent increased the number of extant species to eight, including one fossil species.

    The genus Thalassina Latreille, 1806, is currently considered as comprising two Recent valid species: Thalassina anomala (Herbst, 1804), type species, and Thalassina squamifera De Man, 1915, and the Australian fossil Thalassina emerii Bell, 1844. The genus is widely distributed across the Indo-West Pacifi c.
    At present, only three species were reported: these are Thalassina anomala (Herbst, 1804), Thalassina squamifera (De Man, 1915) (Ngoc-Ho and de Saint Laurent 2009), and the recently discovered Thalassina spinosa (Ngoc-Ho and de Saint Laurent, 2009) in Panay Island (Bedi and Primavera 2018).
    Thalassina is a genus of mud lobsters found in the mangrove swamps of the Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean. Its nocturnal burrowing is important for the recycling of nutrients in the mangrove ecosystem, although it is sometimes considered a pest of fish and prawn farms .
