But the giant larvacean caught his eye, dubbing the creature Bathochordaeus charon after the boatman who ferried passengers across the river Styx. Most larvaceans are millimeter-sized tadpole-shaped tunicates with a primitive spinal cords.
Morphology and molecular data clearly distinguish B. charon from its congener, B. stygius. This paper establishes the first review of Bathochordaeus charon since its original description, extends the range of this species to the northeast Pacific Ocean, and provides the first molecular evidence for two species of Bathochordaeus.
House: Chun ( 1900) speculated that such large animals as Bathochordaeus must make “pumpkin”-sized houses.
