Ommastrephinae is a subfamily of squids under the family Ommastrephidae . Ommastrephinae includes the largest species of squids belonging to the family Ommastrephidae, Humboldt squid ( Dosidicus gigas) which can grow to 1.5 metres (4.9 ft) in mantle length (ML).
A number of species are fished commercially. Ommastrephid squids are among the strongest swimmers in the Cephalopoda. Some are commonly known as "flying squid" due to their ability to glide over the ocean surface as seen in the photographs. Figure. A squid, presumably Ommastrephes bartramii, gliding over the sea surface near Japan.
Ommastrephinae are mostly pelagic members of the family Ommastrephidae. Some species of the subfamily (notably Sthenoteuthis and Ommastrephes) are known for their behavior of leaping out of the water (hence the common name 'flying squid').
Furthermore, these differences are more pronounced between Ommastrephes group 1 (North Atlantic Ommastrephes) and the other Ommastrephes species than they are among some other ommastrephid genera (Nigmatullin et al., 2003).
