The oilfish, Ruvettus pretiosus, is an incidental by-catch of the drifting surface longlines targeting swordfish and Thunnidae in the Mediterranean and elsewhere. Despite its global distribution and frequent occurrence in the catch of many fishing gears, little is known about its biology.
    Ruvettus pretiosus. Sometimes the fish are misidentified as rudderfish— Centrolophus niger and Tubbia species—or butterfish— Scatophagus spp.—which can also be used as a misnomer for rudderfish species.
    Feeds on fish, crustaceans and squid (Ref. 6181 ). The peculiar wooden 'palu' or Ruvettus hook is used to catch this species in south central Pacific (Ref. 6181 ). The flesh is very oily, with purgative properties, if eaten much (Ref. 6181 ). Marketed fresh and as fish cakes in Japan (Ref. 9302 ); also processed into fishmeal (Ref. 5217 ).
