The sandbar shark ( Carcharhinus plumbeus ), also known as the brown shark or thickskin shark, is a species of requiem shark, and part of the family Carcharhinidae, native to the Atlantic Ocean and the Indo-Pacific. It is distinguishable by its very high first dorsal fin and interdorsal ridge.
The sandbar shark is one of the largest coastal sharks in the world, and is closely related to the dusky shark, the bignose shark, and the bull shark. Its dorsal fin is triangular and very high, and it has very long pectoral fins. Sandbar sharks usually have heavy-set bodies and rounded snouts that are shorter than the average shark's snout.
The species name milberti was used by some scientists until recently, based on the belief that the population of sandbar sharks in the Mediterranean Sea was made up of a distinct species. It is now known that these sharks are identical to those from the western Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
It has several other names, such as brown shark and thick skin shark, and is often confused for the sand tiger shark, which is an entirely separate species despite the two having similar sounding names. Sandbar males are 5.9 ft long, while females are a bit longer at 6.6–8.2 ft. On average, these sharks weigh 100 to 200 lbs.
These sharks have a mid-dorsal ridge that runs from behind their first dorsal fin to their second dorsal fin. This ridge is a distinguishing characteristic of sandbar sharks. Sandbar sharks are known for their relatively placid behavior, and they are not considered to be a significant threat to humans.
The Sandbar Shark is listed as “vulnerable” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. The species is also listed as “Endangered” in some regions. One of the biggest threats to Sandbar Sharks is overfishing.
