In our current work, Aegyriana oliva is the fourth reported ciliate embracing introns, and is also the first reported ciliate having three introns, namely Aol.S516, Aol.S943, and Aol.S1506. The S943 was first reported in Trichopodiella faurei , while the S1506 intron was only described in Tokophrya lemnarum .
With full support, Aegyria apoliva sp. nov. (FJ998028) is found to cluster with A. oliva (FJ998029) and then branch into A. foissneri (KX364493), which indicates that Aegyria is monophyletic. Aegyria groups with Trichopodiella (ML 98%, BI 1.00) within the family Hartmannulidae.
So far, there are five valid species in the genus Aegyria: A. oliva Claparède and Lachmann, 1859; A. minuta ( Deroux, 1974) Chen et al., 2012; A. paroliva ( Song and Wilbert, 2002) Chen et al., 2012; A. rostellum Chen et al., 2012 and A. foissneri Qu et al., 2017.
Aegyria apoliva sp. nov. is characterized as following: body size 100–120 × 50–70 μm in vivo with dark pigment spot on anterior left part of cell; 48–69 somatic kineties; one preoral and four or five circumoral kineties; 9–13 transpodial segments; 26–40 nematodesmal rods; 6–10 contractile vacuoles.
