      E. H. Wilson made this photograph of a large Castanea henryi growing in Hubei Sheng, China, on June 22, 1910. Archives of the Arnold Arboretum Charles Sprague Sargent wrote a beautiful description of this chestnut tree in his Plantae Wilsonianae in 1917. He also revised the taxonomy to the name that we still use today.
The one exception was the variety Castanea henryi, which did not appear to be affected by this disease. It has since been used to cross-breed to produce better timber and also nut-producing trees. Its native habitat includes mountain slopes in mixed forests. Its best performance will be in locations with cold winters and hot summers.
Castanea is derived from the Greek word for the European chestnut tree, while henri honors Dr. Augustine Henry, an Irish physician. Fluent in Chinese, part of his job included the collection of medicinal plant collecting. The common names include chinquapin, which roughly translates to 'large fruit'.
Erratum 15 December 2010: The specimen shown in the two images above has been identified as a Castanea hybrid rather than straight species Castanea henryi. Sandra L. Anagnostakis is a research scientist in plant pathology and ecology at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in New Haven, Connecticut.
