Three specimens were collected in the southern Alboran Sea in 1991, at depths ranging from 706-833 m (Mills et al. 1996), but nowhere else in the Mediterranean Sea.
Remarks Chaikin and Gevili (pers. com.) remarked on the painfully stinging sensation delivered by R. filiformis. Rhizophysa filiformis is considered uncommon yet widely distributed in the world oceans and present in the western Mediterranean (Pagès and Gili 1992; Bouillon et al. 2004).
Rhizophysidae is a family of siphonophores in the suborder Cystonectae. It includes Bathyphysa conifera, sometimes called the "flying spaghetti monster". In Japanese, the family is called ボウズニラ ( bouzunira ).
All examined specimens of Rhizophysa filiformis had the same uniserial development of gastrozooids and gonodendra as B. sibogae (Fig. 2 b). There were from one to six gonodendra found between the mature gastrozooids. The gonodendra develop in the same manner as those of B. sibogae (Fig. 3) and have the same general structure at maturity.
