Although this cohort could have been composed of astartids of different ages, their age could not have been below 20 years; otherwise we would have found some juveniles at the start of monitoring or in the initial samples in 1978. Thus the life span of A. borealis can be over 20 (or even much more than 20) years, at least in the study area.
Motile filter-feeders, astartids inhabit depths ranging from 2 m to more than 100 m, preferring mixed sediments (Naumov, 2006 ). A. borealis is the most shallow-water species of the White Sea astartids (Naumov, 2006 ), generally inhabiting 3–6 m deep bottom slopes; it is therefore especially suitable as a model object.
A population of Astarte borealis was found in the subtidal zone of a small inlet (Ilistaya inlet) located on Gorely Island (Fig. 1 a, b; N67°05.41′; E32°40.44′, Kandalaksha State Nature Reserve area, White Sea). The depth of the inlet varies between 0 and 8 m; the slope of the subtidal bottom is approximately 20°.
