One subclade ( Calocalanus contractus, C. minutus, C. styliremis, Calocalanus sp. 1, Calocalanus sp. 2) was composed of a group of closely related species. Within this clade, p -distances were lower than those obtained when comparing these taxa with the other three species of Calocalanus ( t -tests, p < 0.001 for 18S and H3, p = 0.004 for COI).
Despite their ecological importance, the evolutionary and systematic relationships within the family remain largely unknown, with contradictory results from numerous studies since Giesbrecht (1893) erected the family Paracalanidae, which included the genera Acrocalanus, Calocalanus and Paracalanus ( Fig. 1 ). Fig. 1.
In clade 6b Calocalanus plumulosus and C. pavo were closely-related, but the branch length for C. pavo indicates that this species is genetically different from the other two species in clade 6b ( Fig. 3, Fig. 4 ). These two groups were well supported.
Calocalanus pavo was very distant to all other analyzed Calocalanus species (range 0.034–0.058). Between-genus distances ranged from 0.14 to 0.089. For H3, the within-genus distances varied between 0.000 and 0.046, but a higher distance was found between the two Parvocalanus crassirostris populations from Hawaii and the NW Atlantic (0.074).
