Gegenbaur, C. (1870). Grundzüge der vergleichenden Anatomie. Leipzig, 1870, (ed. 2) : 158-281. [details] Etymology Enteropneusta ("gut breathers") comes from the Greek entero ("intestine") and pneu- (prefix for "to breathe").
The Enteropneusta is a well-defined phylum consisting of approximately ninety species of burrowing or creeping, marine, worm-like invertebrates. On the basis of morphological characters, Pterobranchia is the sister group of the three or four enteropneust families.
Enteropneusts are marine benthic worms with a tripartite body plan, divided along the anteroposterior (AP) axis into a preoral proboscis, a collar that encloses the buccal cavity, and a long trunk that comprises an anterior pharynx perforated by gill slits, the digestive tract and gonads.
We provide direct evidence that some enteropneusts are highly mobile—using changes in posture and currents to drift between feeding sites—and are prominent members of deep, epibenthic communities. In addition, we provide ecological information for each species.
