The Hexanchiformes / hɛkˈsæŋkɪfɔːrmiːz / are a primitive order of sharks, [a] numbering just seven extant species in two families. Fossil sharks that were apparently very similar to modern sevengill species are known from Jurassic specimens. Due to their primitive anatomy, hexanchiforms were previously considered the most basal group of sharks.
Due to the inaccessible depths inhabited by these sharks, we know very little about them. The hexanchoids - collectively termed 'cow sharks' - are of stout build, having underslung jaws armed with thorn-like teeth above and unique, cockscomb-shaped teeth below.

The Bluntnose Sixgill shark (Hexanchus griseus) is the largest hexanchoid, growing to more than 15.5 feet (4.8 metres) in length, while the Sharpnose Sevengill shark ( Heptranchias perlo) is the smallest, growing to a maximum length of 4.5 feet (1.4 metres).

Within the genus Hexanchus, highly conserved morphology coupled with the dearth of specimens available for study has produced decades of difficulty in describing alpha taxonomy, distribution, and detailed life-history characters in most areas where these animals occur. Currently, two valid species are recognized in the genus Hexanchus.
