    Didemnidae - Wikipedia

Didemnidae, or Didemnidæ, is a family of colonial tunicates in the order Aplousobranchia. These marine animals are found in shallow water on the seabed. Members of this family have small zooids that form encrusting colonies. The body of each zooid is divided into a thorax and an abdomen. Meer weergeven

Didemnum is a genus of colonial tunicates in the family Didemnidae. It is the most speciose genus in the didemnid family. Species in this genus often have small calcareous spicules embedded in the tunic and form irregular or lobed colonies.

The family Didemnidae includes 20% of all known ascidians with six genera in the Atlantic. Here, we describe five new species in the Didemnidae from central coastal Brazil.
Overall, the recovered molecular phylogeny of Didemnidae is supported by morphological evidence. The spiralled sperm duct and the spherical-/star-shaped spicules with diverse radial structures, along with esophageal budding and a flexed gut loop, are considered the most distinctive synapomorphies for Didemnidae.
Analyses with , 18S, and the concatenated data set recovered all of the genera traditionally accepted for Didemnidae as monophyletic except for Trididemnum, which was not fully resolved with the data (DNA sequences, Fig. 1; and amino acid tree, Fig. S2).
