Paradiopatra fiordica is the only known species of the genus with exclusively tridentate pseudocompound falcigers. North Atlantic; widely distributed along the coast of Norway and south-west of Iceland ( Fig. 37 ). Depth range 165–1125 m, but mainly below 500 m.
Paradiopatra fiordica commonly occurred in the samples with P. quadricuspis. Although the former can be distinguished from the latter by the absence rather than the presence of branchiae, and by the presence of tridentate rather than bidentate falcigers, they are often misidentified.
The name Paradiopatra was originally proposed by Ehlers (1887) as a subgenus for worms resembling Diopatra, but lacking branchiae. Hartman (1959) designated Paradiopatra fragosa Ehlers, 1887 as the type species.
Twenty-six valid species of Paradiopatra, including a new species, Paradiopatra pyricirra sp. nov., are described or re-described and illustrated based on original descriptions and re-examination of type and non-type material. Identification keys to genera included in the Diopatra complex, and to all accepted Paradiopatra species, are presented.
