In this study, the model species Ampelisca brevicornis (Costa, 1853) has been chosen because of its cosmopolitan distribution and is considered one of the most tolerant amphipod species to OA ( Basallote et al., 2014) for studying the possible biochemical and physiological plasticity to OA and how this can influence its life cycle.
To interrogate UK data visit the NBN Atlas. Ampelisca brevicornis is a typical amphipod with a laterally compressed, smooth, curved body. It grows up to 12mm long and is translucent whitish with scattered dark brown and/or yellow spots.
P7 merus without lobe           A. dalmatina. Distribution A total of 40 Ampeliscaspecies are currently known from the study area, comprehending the North-eastern Atlantic coast between the Strait of Gibraltar, in Southern Spain, to the Strait of Dover, in the Eastern part of the English Channel (Figure 2).
The Ampelisca genus presents high morphological homogeneity and the identification of the species by ecologists remains difficult. Ampelisca are also characterized by a high degree of sympatry, a rare situation in amphipods, and in this study, we report up to nine species coexisting in the same site.
