Variety Lytechinus variegatus var. pallida H.L. Clark, 1925 accepted as Lytechinus variegatus pallida H.L. Clark, 1925 accepted as Lytechinus variegatus pallidus H.L. Clark, 1925 (Infrasubspecific taxon that is to be treated as a subspecies according to ICZN 4th Ed. Article 45.6.4) (of Echinus variegatus Lamarck, 1816) Lamarck, J.-B. M. de. (1816).
Lytechinus variegatus represents a dominant species in many of the seagrass meadows throughout these regions. As a ruderal species, L. variegatus has rapid growth, early reproductive maturity, and short longevity. These characteristics make L. variegatus a potential candidate for fisheries and/or aquaculture.
Lytechinus variegatus feeds mainly on Thalassia sp., a type of seagrass, although is known to be omnivorous in captivity (Moore 1963). Many different structures aid in the feeding of a sea urchin. The spines and tube feet are both involved in the capture of drifting particles in the water column.
For example, in the central gulf coast of Florida A. punctulata consumes mainly animals while Lytechinus variegatus depletes the algal resources ( Cobb and Lawrence, 2005 ). Moreover, both species may occupy different microhabitats, with A. punctulata abundant on hard substrata and L. variegatus usually abundant on sand ( Hill and Lawrence, 2003 ).
