Lepidopleurida are mostly defined based on plesiomorphic characters such as the presence of unslitted valve insertion plates, a posterior gill arrangement (adanal), simple gamete structures, and special aesthete innervation patterns [ 23, 96 ]. The only defining synapomorphy might be the sensory “Schwabe organ” [ 26 ].
Within Lepidopleurida, the family Leptochitonidae s.s. is restricted to NE Atlantic species, represented here by Leptochiton asellus and Lepidopleurus cajetaus, with the Pacific Leptochiton cascadiensis outside this clade, as reported in the previous molecular studies using Sanger sequencing (Sigwart 2016; Sigwart et al. 2011 ).
Members of Chitonida exhibit derived valve features compared to Lepidopleurida, such as the distal extensions of the articulamentum shell layer that anchor valves into the surrounding girdle (insertion plates); these extensions are slit with rays to permit the innervation of aesthete sensory organs spread across dorsal valve surfaces [ 29 ].
Basal cells projecting to the epithelial surface and cells bearing a large number of ciliary structures may be indicative of sensory function. The Schwabe organ is present in all genera within Lepidopleurida (and absent throughout Chitonida) and represents a novel anatomical synapomorphy of the clade.
