Eighteen fossil species of bregmacerotids have been recognised: 17 species within the middle Eocene–Recent genus Bregmaceros (five species based on articulated skeletons, including two with otoliths in situ, and 12 species based on isolated otoliths alone) and the Miocene Bregmacerina antiqua.
The actual jaw joint is farther back, below the posterior portion of the orbit, as in other fossil species of Bregmaceros. In our opinion, the lectotype exhibits no taxonomically significant features that confidently differentiate it from unequivocal specimens of B. albyi.
Not depicted are the Miocene locality of Ras Dib, Egypt, on the west coast of the Red Sea, from which B. cf. filamentosus has been reported (Gaudant and Rouchy 1986) or the type locality for Bregmacerina antiqua in the Miocene of Russia Temporal ranges of Bregmaceros species based on isolated otoliths (including B. albyi) for the Eocene–Miocene.
The review of fossil bregmacerotids finds that, of the five described skeletal-based species of Bregmaceros, only two are diagnosable (i.e. valid): B. filamentosus (including junior subjective synonym B. prahovanus) and B. albyi (including junior subjective synonym B. bosniaski ).
