The Nereid Platynereis dumerilii (Audouin and Milne Edwards (Annales des Sciences Naturelles 1:195–269, 1833) is a marine annelid that belongs to the Nereididae, a family of errant polychaete worms.
Platynereis dumerilii is an annelid worm, very different from a nematode. Annelids are segmented invertebrates that include organisms such as earthworms, leeches, sea mice, Christmas tree worms and nereidids. The latter is the group to which Platynereis also belongs.
The polychaete annelid Platynereis dumerilii is an emerging model organism for the study of molecular developmental processes, evolution, neurobiology and marine biology. Annelids belong to the Lophotrochozoa, the so far understudied third major branch of bilaterian animals besides deuterostomes and ecdysozoans.
