    S. luridus is naturally distributed throughout the eastern African coast, around Reunion Island, the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea ( Golani et al., 2002 ). Its non-native distribution is in the Mediterranean where it first arrived through the Suez Canal in 1955 ( Ben-Tuvia, 1964 ).
    S. luridus is most threatened by predation during the planktonic and larval stage; large groupers have been recorded as predators ( Moyle and Cech, 2000 ). The presence of poisonous spines highlights the severe predation pressures. The sharp and strong spines are coated with a mucous mixed with venom and can cause painful wounds.
