Challenging the generally accepted view of the fourhorn sculpin Triglopsis quadricornis as a cold-stenothermal and true benthic species, novel findings of juveniles in the pelagic habitat of Lake Vättern, Sweden, have been examined and critically evaluated.
There is no consensus on the status of the species M. quadricornis. It has been referred to the genus Triglopsis [ 1, 36, 37 ], considered to be in the genus Myoxocephalus [ 2, 3 ], combined with M. thompsonii in a complex of species, or divided into subspecies M. quadricornis quadricornis and M. q. thompsonii [ 9, 38, 39 ].
It forms a common group with species from other genera of the subfamily Myoxocephalinae. M. quadricornis is closest to Megalocottus platycephalus. The genetic distances between them correspond to the differences between species of the same genus (average of 2.8%).
In Kontula and Väinöla (2003), the M. quadricornis complex is found inside a clade of the genus Myoxocephalus [ 9 ]. According to the authors, recognition of the validity of the genus Triglopsis would make the rest of the Myoxocephalus a paraphiletic group.
