Nephtheidae is a family of soft corals in the phylum Cnidaria. Members of this family are known as carnation corals, tree corals or colt soft corals. They are very attractive and show a wide range of rich and pastel colours including reds, pinks, yellows and purples. They are popular with reef aquarium hobbyists.

What is a Nephthea?
With its highly branched structure and long, slender “arms,” Nephthea is a standard for beginners and veterans alike. Many members of the family Nephthiidae (Stereonephthea, Lemnalia, Capnella, Litophyton, etc.) are regularly confused with one another.

Where does nephthya come from?
UCA collects pink Nephthya from the Great Barrier Reef, but this particular corals came in the US from Japan in very small quantities. This corals used to be known only from Okinawa in the south of Japan, even though some were also spotted from Fiji, but never really imported. This species host Symbiotic algae!

What is a pink nephthya?
Another opened Nephthea close cousin: Stereonephthya with supporting bundle sclerite below each polyp. The Pink Nephthya is a bushy, compact, branching soft coral. It has small calcium spikes to give it support called ‘sclerites’, and in this species they are small and short, in high density.

What does Nephthea look like?
Nephthea is readily identified by its highly clustered polyps at the end of terminal branches to form lumpy “catkins.” These clusters look this cauliflower when the colony is slightly deflated. It generally grows in an upright tree-like form. Even compared to other members of its family, it is quite soft-bodied.
